Slow Computer Fix: Understanding the Registry
To understand any slow computer fix we need to have some general information to work from and assess our individual situation. Computers are confusing at best to most people. But it is not necessary to understand them completely. Almost no one really does. Don’t be intimidated. Gather some information and act on what you find.
The basic starting up of your computer is centered on your windows registry. Windows relies on the registry for much of its vital information at start-up, such as general functions of programs, preferences, drivers, hardware configurations, etc.
The maintaining of the registry has been an inherent problem for computers. As important as the registry is to a computer seems to have gone neglected when it comes to control and organization. Why can we have a “fix” such as an automatic “Spell Check” and yet have such problems with our systems information “brain”, the registry?
One example of this problem is the way programs are uninstalled. A typical un-install leaves parts of the program scattered all over your hard drive. Another example is that Windows XP records all information as many as 5 times, in different locations, again all over your computer hard drive. This plays havoc with your computer registry and slows your computer over time.
At start-up your computer has many functions to perform. If your registry is not organized correctly it will slow down the start-up procedure. A poorly optimized registry can be simple described as a maze. It takes many loops and turns to get from the beginning of the maze to the end. You want your computer to take the shortest and fastest route to get you up and running as fast as possible.
So the computer registry acts as the brain or central processing unit. With use and time it will become disorganized with errors, fragments of data, and just generally filled with unneeded junk. As you would organize your office desk, your computer registry needs a good cleaning out every once in a while. This can be a simple slow computer fix.
Is it hard to do? Not at all. There are many good registry cleaner / optimizers on the market. Most will let you do a free scan that will show you where your computer really stands – how disorganized it is. It’s a simple download walk through process.
